Seaside's Three Course Challenge consists of three races of varying length and difficulty. The Seven Varsity Runners from each team draw lots to determine which race each of them will compete in. The terrain varies from mowed fields and parade grounds to sand, dirt and gravel roads through forest, fields and dunes. In the Moderate and Difficult races the runners race through a mud pit. In the Difficult race they have to navigate a steep narrow uphill dirt trail. The girls start their races five minutes after the boys have left the starting line so there are two races going consecutively over the same course. Due to the terrain spectators are limited to only a small portion of each race that they can view. Most spectators stay around the Start/Finish areas but quite a few line both sides of the Mud Pit which is back in the forest on the edge of the dunes. In the background throughout the day is the near constant sound of drumming. In 2006 over 2,000 runners from 90+ schools participated.
