Southridge debuted their new course at Hansen Park in Kennewick Thursday for the last CBBN league meet of the season. The course coverered 3 miles in 3 loops, ran fast and was favorably veiwed from the coaches I talked to. As a photographer I found it to be a very spectator friendly course; it was very easy to position myself at 3 to 4 different positions throughout the race, vary them from race to race, and still be at the finish line as the leaders came in. Look forward to around 800 photos from the meet in the next week
At the beginning of the season everyone was saying that the league title was going to be decided at the first league meet, on both the boys side and the girls. For the girls that was true up to a point. The Eisenhower girls, 10-0 going in to the final meet of the season had a serious challenge from Wenatchee, 9-1. At the finish I thought the Wenatchee girls had the edge, as their 2nd-6th runners(E. Kuest, E. Nordt, S. Pauly, L. Thorson, C. Pauly, M. Zamora) finished in a pack ahead of Ike's number 5 (Kirsten Kaplan). The race was ultimately decided by the finish of the top girls from each team with Berenice Penaloza and Mayra Chavez (Ike) going 1-2 in team scoring, followed by Hannah Kiser of Wenatchee in 3rd and Katherine Bravo on her heals in 4th for the match-up between teams to give Ike a 25-32 victory. Overall Audrey Urlacher of West Valley won the Varsity race with a time of 18:24.3. Berenice Penaloza of Eisenhower was 2nd at 18:29.6. The rest of the girls' varsity top 10 (plus Ike girls) were Marisa Vander Malle (Pasco) 18:30., Rachel Nelson (Walla Walla) 18:40., Kaitlin Kaluzny (Davis) 18:43, Margret Parobek (West Valley) 18:46, Mayra Chavez (Eisenhower) 18:58, Hannah Kiser (Wenatchee) 19:05, Katherine Bravo (Eisenhower) 19:12, Siena Noe (West Valley) 19:28, 12. Kirsten Sheffield (Eisenhower) 19:36, 27. Kirsten Kaplan (Eisenhower) 20:31, 33. Lindsy Thomas (Eisenhower) 21:47, and 36. Ana Solorzano (Eisenhower) 22:44. Eisenhower went 4-0 on the day to complete their undefeated season with a league record of 14-0. Davis, Southridge, Wenatchee and West Valley all went 3-1; Pasco and Walla Walla both lost all 4 of their matchups.
On the boys side there were a couple of very important team competitions decided by the number 6 runners. Going in to the meet Southridge and Wenatchee both had 9-1 records to Eisenhower's 8-2 for the season. Eisenhower and Wenatchee finished tied at 28 points in their dual meet and Eisenhower won the victory on the performance of their number 6 runner, Santo Vargas who came in 2 places ahead of Wenatchee's #6, Joe Cordes. Then in the team competion between Wenatchee and Southridge, they both tied with 28 points with Southridge's 6th runner (18. Kyle Sturdefant) securing the win. Timothy Cummings of Eisenhower turned in another strong performance to win the race with a time of 15:33 for the 3 mile course. Bryan Simison, in only his second race this season due to a foot injury, ran a solid race and finished in 6th place with a time of 15:46.
