YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC Eisenhower senior Chelsea VanDeBrake, currently the Big Nine Conference's top-ranked runner in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200, has given a verbal commitment to attend Washington State University on a track and cross country scholarship.
VanDeBrake picked WSU after making other recruiting visits to Iona in New York and Seattle Pacific.
"It's always been my dream to run in the Pac 10," said VanDeBrake, who competed at West Valley through her junior year. "On my visit I absolutely loved the team, and Isley Gonzalez (a WSU sophomore from Sunnyside) has been one of my really good friends since my sophomore year."
VanDeBrake was the Big Nine's district cross country champion last fall and she placed sixth in the 4A state meet.
This spring she leads the Valley in the 1,600 (5:05.66) and 3,200 (11:03.10).
